White, albino-like penguin found in Antarctica

Birds of a feather usually flock together, but not in the case of a rare “white” mutant penguin. The penguin, seen at the edge of one of the South Shetland Islands, astonished tourists on a National GeographicJourney to Antarctica. (Watch video)

Though the penguin looks like an albino, the bird actually appears to have isabellinism. The condition is a genetic mutation that dilutes pigment in penguins’ feathers, according to a 2009 study on isabellinism published in the journal Marine Ornithology.

When first viewing the artwork of Shintaro Ohata up close it appears the scenes are made from simple oil paints, but take a step back and you’re in for a surprise. Each piece is actually a hybrid of painted canvas and sculpture that blend almost flawlessly in color and texture to create a single image. The cinematic figures are sculpted from polystyrene while the backgrounds are made from traditional painting techniques.

Caring for an aging population: a Q & A...

ucsdhealthsciences:

Caring for an aging population: a Q & A with our geriatric specialist

It’s not news that America is getting older. In 2009, the percentage of the country’s population that was 65 and older was 12.9 percent, which worked out to roughly 40 million people or one in every eight Americans. By 2030 that figure is projected to grow to more than 72 million elderly Americans or 19 percent of the population, one in five.

An aging America presents many challenges, not least of which is how to adequately care for them. Getting older means, alas, a greater likelihood of aches, pains, ailments, conditions and disease, but attracting and training doctors specialized in the particular health needs of the elderly has become an increasingly daunting task.

We asked Kwi Bulow, MD, a professor and geriatric specialist at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine to talk about treating older patients and finding the doctors to do so.

Q: Why is it difficult to attract medical school students and new doctors to the practice of geriatric medicine?

A: Students go into clinical medicine because they want to cure diseases and positively impact people’s lives. As a medical student I saw a patient come in with severe pain from gallstones, undergo surgery and experience prompt relief from pain, much to the mutual satisfaction of both the patient and the surgeon. In geriatrics, the results are sometimes subtle and a long time in coming, even though they are definitely there. Experienced physicians who have long-term relationships with patients know that they can do things that can make positive and meaningful differences in their patients’ lives. When students see patients one afternoon in a clinic, it’s hard for them to see that impact. Older patients do not bounce back quickly from illness, so that when students see a very ill older patient in a hospital, they do not see how the patient improved over time in a rehabilitation center and then at home over the ensuing weeks and even months.

Our hospitals, clinics, and care protocols are not very friendly to older patients who may have sensory deficits or have trouble moving quickly or are prone to complications. That also adds to the frustrations of trainees who are trying to get through a busy day taking care of many patients quickly and efficiently. Ideally, there should be an environment that is optimal for treating these vulnerable patients and sufficient number of geriatricians who can model excellent care.

Students are also discouraged by older patients who often have diseases for which there are no effective interventions, though we are now beginning to see some very exciting developments in diagnosis and treatment of diseases like Alzheimer’s. That may help stimulate greater interest in the care of older patients.

Another barrier is that some students feel it is depressing to work with older patient when, in fact, they often have fascinating personal histories and wonderful personalities. To challenge stereotypes about aging and help students learn more about older people, we offer an elective course in which six medical students and six pharmacy students are paired up with 12 seniors in the community to engage in interactive learning. These seniors recognize the need to train health care professionals and they are willing to volunteer to make the difference. Some of them previously had negative experiences with doctors who were not prepared to care for older patients. For example, one woman related that her doctor would address her daughter instead of her, assuming that she must be demented just because she is old.

Today marks the day that African-Americans were freed from slavery. It was on June 19th, 1865 that the last slaves were freed from Galveston, Texas after the Emancipation Proclamation was established January 1, 1863.
It’s important that black people learn, embrace, and celebrate Juneteenth. Many of us celebrate the 4th of July, but don’t know anything about Juneteenth.

First, the American independence day is July 4th 1776, 89 years before black people were freed from slavery. During the American Revolution guess who was on the front lines fighting to help America gain their independence; Black people! What happened after they helped America gain their independence? They resumed they’re lives as being slaves.

Juneteenth is a part of our history. Your not going see to the media promote our history unless its in February. Especially the fact that the celebration is centered around freedom from slavery. Africans were enslaved for over 400 years and our ancestors fought and died trying to get their freedom. Remember them by embracing Juneteenth!!!
Written by: @ObaBlacko (IG), Dreaded_InnerG (Twitter)

I have been fed lines as crooked and sharp as any twisted dagger. Even laughed as the blade pierced skin, allowing plasma to creep out in waves. How could I ever help myself? The ideal I carried of love was one distilled in truth; honorable words were the only language romantics spoke. To me, the weapons my Don Juan’s weaved were nothing more than flowers. I saw what I desired to see. I believed in the fairy tale notion that all men loved equally and without deceit. I was wrong.

Not all of us carry torches sweet; not all of our home fires are simple, for some decimate houses. Sometimes it is mere passion or obsession that drives us to say, “I love you.” It is this void which pulls us to worship without understanding. You see, some people yearn to be noticed, desired and deemed worthy of affection. Others only like control.

I, myself, have willingly given myself up for ransom. With stars shining bright out these eyes, I’ve traded valentines for abuse. Those promises twisted themselves sick inside brain matter whenever I dreamed. Oh, and how I dreamed! That the hand I longed to hold was tender; that his smile could be only mine for the taking. Whenever I was paid a compliment (no matter how minuscule) I clung to it like a jungle cat clings to their hapless prey. I went in for the kill.

Their declarations helped soothed the doubts I’d feel, squirming within my chest. Surely his habitual coldness meant nothing? Its just the heart melting. Its simply the spirit coming out of a long frost. I was absurd. I truly felt that my love was special; that I could somehow reach past the monster in the dark, and rescue the man within. I never once stopped to realize that, perhaps, there was no one to save.

I am all stitches, bruises and blemishes now. The abrasions of past lovers will forever remain on my skin. Their lines cut me raw. Revealed the sinew of the child buried underneath—-the heart of the romantic. All I ever was or will be remains here. My altruistic vision of the world (and the people in it) are cocooned within my heart. Fractured though it might be, I am stronger now because of my heartbreak. I am no victim.

If you gaze intensely into the fountain of myself, you will perceive only clarity. I am a woman no more cloistered in the belief that words outweigh truth. I know who it is I am seeking. I know the partner I wish to claim for my marriage bed. I wish to be loved softly; I wish to be cherished. I need to be seen as a woman worth opening doors for.

From this night onward, I refuse to be known as wretched or desperate or pathetic. Yes! No dagger soaked in sickly sweet perfume shall deceive me now. My heart is the wiser (as is my head). It whispers what I should have sung all along: to love myself first, so no man can love me second.

How Urban Agriculture Is Revitalizing...

perscientiamlibertas:

How Urban Agriculture Is Revitalizing Local Economies

The rooftop at 810 Humboldt Street in Brooklyn is much different from other buildings; it is home to a 15,000 square-foot hydroponic greenhouse that produces over 100 tons of food per year. The greenhouse, built and operated by New York-based company, Gotham Greens, is supplying year-round ultra-local produce to nearby grocery stores and restaurants.

The greenhouse in Brooklyn epitomizes the rise of a new urban agriculture — farming that is taking place within cities rather than rural areas. Rooftop greenhouses, backyard farms, and community-managed garden plots are all examples of this growing movement. At my own house in Southern California, we are growing over 5,000 pounds of food per year on a plot of land the size of an NBA basketball court — enough food to feed my family of four all year.

The local food movement has its roots in a desire to eat honest, non-toxic, nutritious food. The emerging framework of urban agriculture, however, is having as significant of an effect on our economy as it is on our health.

As it is, about 20 percent of U.S. farmland is located near metropolitan areas, yet metropolitan areas are home to over 80 percent of our population. Over three-quarters of the U.S. population is sharing only 3 percent of U.S. land area. The same demographics are present in most Western countries, and most of the rest of the world is on a similar trajectory.

By shifting a share of food production away from the rural areas and into the urban areas themselves, urban farming is changing the food system. Changes in the food system have ripple effects through everything because food is a central part of all human activity. The growth of this new agriculture is reviving and stimulating local economies like never before.

Here are four ways this is happening.
